What Is a Class 4 Impact-Resistant Roof — and Is It Worth It in San Antonio?

A Class 4 roof uses shingles or panels that have passed the highest rating of the UL 2218 impact test, in which a steel ball is dropped onto the material from a set height without cracking the mat. It is the toughest widely available residential rating, and in a market like San Antonio — which took the costliest hailstorm in Texas history in April 2016 — it is a genuinely reasonable thing to consider rather than an upsell.

What actually drives it

What the rating means

UL 2218 Class 4 is an impact test, not a warranty and not a guarantee. A Class 4 roof can still be damaged by large enough hail.

The insurance angle

Many Texas carriers offer a premium discount for impact-resistant roofing. The amount varies significantly by carrier — ask yours what they allow before you decide, not after.

The cost difference

Class 4 materials cost more up front. In a hail corridor that premium is often recovered through a combination of the discount and not replacing the roof as often.

It is not only shingles

Some metal systems also carry Class 4 ratings, which is worth knowing if you were already weighing metal.

Installation still decides it

A Class 4 shingle installed with poor ventilation and bad flashing is still a roof that fails early. The rating does not rescue the install.

Before you call anyone

Frequently Asked Questions

No. It means the material passed a standardised impact test. Large enough hail damages any roof — Class 4 raises the threshold, it does not remove it.

That is entirely carrier-specific and we will not quote you a figure. Call your agent and ask what they allow for a UL 2218 Class 4 roof before you choose your material.
