Five things, in roughly this order of importance. None of them are the brand on the bundle.
Decking
A sound, properly spaced deck that holds a modern nailing pattern. Everything else sits on this.
Ventilation
Balanced intake and exhaust. Get this wrong and the roof ages from the inside out.
Flashing
Walls, chimneys, valleys, vents and skylights. Almost every leak we trace ends at a flashing detail.
Underlayment and starter
Synthetic underlayment, correct starter course and drip edge — the parts most often cheapened on a bid.

Less than the number on the packet. Texas heat, UV and hail all shorten shingle life, and a “30-year” shingle in this climate is realistically a good deal less than that — ventilation and impact history decide how much less.
Architectural shingles are multi-layered, heavier, more wind-resistant and last longer. Very little new residential work in this market uses 3-tab any more.
A shingle that passes the UL 2218 steel-ball impact test at the highest rating. In a hail market that is worth considering, and many carriers offer a premium discount for it — ask yours what they allow.
Usually yes. A tear-off is the only way to inspect the decking, and layering over an existing roof hides exactly the problems that shorten the life of the new one.
